The Medallion Bill is Bad for Drivers and Passengers

Several councilmembers recently sponsored legislation that would bring taxicab medallions to the District of Columbia. If passed, the medallion bill will cause more than 4,000 drivers to lose their jobs.

Passengers can expect to experience longer wait times, as well as fares that are higher than the rest of the region. Additionally, the bill is likely to cause control of the taxicab industry to fall into the hands of a few large corporations.

The “Professional Taxicab Standards and Medallion Establishment Act of 2011” was co-introduced by councilmembers Marion Barry (Ward 8), Michael Brown (At large) and Harry Thomas (Ward 5), and was co-sponsored by Yvette Alexander (Ward 7).
