Wednesday, the D.C. Taxicab Commission held a public meeting at the U.S. Park Police headquarters in Anacostia Park. The subject of the meeting was the proposed changes to Chapters 5 and 9 of Title 31, the regulatory code that governs the taxicab industry.

Less than an hour into the meeting, I snapped a photo of the commissioners on the dais and was told by a hack inspector that this was prohibited. The hack inspector – with the first initial “K.” and the last name “Bears” written on his shirt – stood in my way so I couldn’t take another photo of the commissioners. I settled on taking his picture. Not long after, things turned chaotic. Continue reading

It’s Time to Inspect D.C.’s Hack Inspectors

Yesterday, Jim Epstein of Reason TV and I were arrested at a public meeting of the D.C. Taxicab Commission (DCTC). The meeting was held at the U.S. Park Police headquarters. Somehow, Park Police officers got roped into becoming the DCTC’s armed security and both Epstein and I have been charged by the Park Police with “Unlawful Entry/Remaining” and “Disorderly Conduct.” Our “crime”? Taking pictures or video.

Less than an hour into the public meeting, a hack (taxi) inspector – with “K. Bears #17” written on his shirt – told me I couldn’t take pictures. He stood in my way to ensure that I didn’t photograph the DCTC commissioners on the dais. I settled on taking a photo of him instead. Not long after, things went haywire.

Earlier this month, leftist Ollanta Humala was elected president of Peru, narrowly defeating the right-wing candidate, Keiko Fujimori, daughter of former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, who was convicted of human rights abuses and is now in prison.

For Carlos Quiroz, a local D.C. blogger who hails from Peru, it was a critical election. “As you might know, Latin America is a very unfair region where very few people have it all and the majority lack opportunities and they live in poverty. And Peru is one of those examples,” Quiroz said June 11, as he took a break from covering the Capital Pride Parade for his blog Carlos in DC. Continue reading

Today is not only Fathers’ Day, but also Juneteenth, which commemorates June 19, 1865, when slavery in the state of Texas ended, 146 years ago today.

Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells, who chairs the Committee on Public Works and Transportation, has decided not to hold a hearing on the controversial taxicab medallion bill before the D.C. Council’s summer recess.

Due to technical difficulties the audio doesn’t include the beginning of the show.

Friday, a private meeting on the medallion bill was held at Guildfield Baptist Church in northeast D.C. Mohammad Momen, owner of Silver Cab, attended the gathering but declined to comment on why he was there. Also present was a driver from Noble Cab who refused to give his name, but claimed to be high up in the company. Before the meeting began I was told to leave by an individual who repeatedly refused to give his name, then claimed it was “Peter Johnson.”

Also in attendance was John Ray, the former councilmember turned lobbyist. Mr. Ray has stated that he “played a big role in writing the [medallion] bill.” As he got out of his car and headed into the church I asked Mr. Ray if he could comment on his legislation. Continue reading

There’s a star for every state and a state for every star. We want our star.  – Johnny Barnes

[Due to the extreme heat the D.C. Statehood ‘Teach In’ begins at 4:00 p.m.]

“Our fate lies in the hands of those 535 people who go to work in the Capitol Building on the House side and on the Senate side,” said Johnny Barnes, executive director of the ACLU of the Nation’s Capital Area. “They can make a judgment that can remove the stain on America’s democracy… that can seal the crack in the Liberty Bell through which 600,000 Americans have fallen.”

Is it just a lot of Mickey Mouse? – Retired FBI agent James Wedick on Metro’s bag search policy

“Is this Metro [bag] search policy necessary and is there a sound criteria for it?” asked Mike German, policy counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union.

At the University of the District of Columbia’s David A. Clarke School of Law, the ACLU of the Nation’s Capital Area presented a symposium in April entitled “Metro Bag Searches: Know Your Rights. Know the Law.”

Tucker Discusses June 1 Taxi Rally on NewsTalk with Bruce DePuyt

Tuesday on NewsTalk with Bruce DePuyt on NewsChannel 8, Pete discussed today’s taxi rally (1 p.m. at Freedom Plaza, 1350 Pennsylvania Ave, NW).

Two of the main concerns drivers have are the recently introduced medallion legislation and the attempted rewrite of Title 31, the legal framework that governs the taxicab industry.

(Both of these issues were discussed in yesterday’s post: June 1 Rally at Freedom Plaza: D.C. Taxi Drivers Demand an End to Attacks on Industry).

June 1 Rally at Freedom Plaza: D.C. Taxi Drivers Demand an End to Attacks on Industry

D.C. taxicab drivers to rally Wednesday June 1 at 1:00 p.m. at Freedom Plaza (1350 Pennsylvania Ave, NW)

The District of Columbia’s taxicab drivers are under attack. May 27, The Small Business Association of DC Taxicab Drivers attempted to submit a petition signed by more than 900 licensed taxi drivers in opposition to the attempt to rewrite the legal framework that governs the taxicab industry (Title 31). The D.C. Taxicab Commission (DCTC) responded by pushing drivers out, locking the doors, contacting the police and calling the group “a mob.

Also, several councilmembers recently sponsored legislation that would bring taxicab medallions to D.C. If passed, the medallion bill is likely to lead to the loss of more than 4,000 jobs, as well as “windfall profits for a small group of people; an overall decline in service with longer waits and higher fares; and a system open to corruption,” the Washington Post noted in an editorial.
