The Arizona Diamondbacks are slated to host the 2011 All-Star Game, but a growing number of individuals and groups are calling on Major League Baseball and Commissioner Bud Selig to move the game due to Arizona’s passage of the anti-immigrant legislation known as SB 1070. Sunday, August 15th, the Washington Nationals’ ace pitcher Stephen Strasburg took the mound against the Diamondbacks, but he was pulled before the start of the sixth inning after activists disrupted the game. Nationals’ manager Jim Riggleman told the Washington Post, “Once that stuff was going on, I decided I’m not going to throw him back out there.”

Mackenzie Baris and Navid Nasr were two of the individuals involved in the well-coordinated action which is part of a series of disruptions of Diamondback games. As she ran onto the field, Baris was tackled by a security guard before she was able to completely unfurl a banner which read, “Boycott Racism. Stop SB 1070. Move the Game.” As Baris was being tackled, Navid Nasr helped unfurl a banner in the stands which read, “Bud Selig, Move All Star Game. No SB 1070.”

Tuesday, the D.C. Council unanimously passed legislation that will require that juveniles have their criminal records released to the public if they are convicted of a violent crime. If Mayor Adrian Fenty signs the legislation, it may make it harder for young people convicted of an offense to go college or get a job. Harold Hunter works with young people as a substitute teacher with DCPS and as a volunteer with Cease-Fire Don’t Smoke the Brothers and Sisters. Hunter expressed concern regarding the Council’s recent legislation and called on Mayor Fenty not to sign the bill in its current form.

The Washington Post recently published a manifesto on school reform which claimed that the difficulty in removing incompetent teachers has “left our school districts impotent and, worse, has robbed millions of children of a real future.” The Manifesto was signed by 16 big-city school district chiefs, including New York City Schools Chancellor Joel Klein, outgoing DC Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee, Baltimore Public Schools Chief Executive Andres Alfonso, superintendant of Prince George’s County Public Schools William Hite, among others.

Rosa Lozano

On August 15th, youth organizer Rosa Lozano and several other activists disrupted the Nationals baseball game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Rosa, who works with CASA de Maryland, and fellow activist Mackenzie Baris, who works with DC Jobs With Justice, ran onto the field with a sign that read “Boycott Racism.” Standing not far from the D.C. Superior Court following her conviction and sentence for her act of civil disobedience, Lozano explained the sign’s significance, “This was a message in reference to the anti-immigrant law in Arizona, SB 1070.”

Candlelight vigil outside DC9 for Ali Ahmed Mohammed

Now, to today’s local headlines.

Earlier today, the Chair of D.C.’s Committee on Human Services, Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells, withdrew his emergency legislation which would have required families to prove District residency before being sheltered. Wells, however, does plan to move forward with similar legislation, but not on an emergency basis. Wells discussed the withdrawl of his emergency legislation before the D.C. Council’s Committee of the Whole.

Alex Halderman testifying before the DC City Council

Alex Halderman traveled all the way from Michigan to attend a D.C. Council hearing on internet voting. In his testimony before the Committee on Government Operations and the Environment, Halderman, a professor at the University of Michigan, offered one stunning revelation after another.

Within 36 hours of the challenge issued by D.C.’s Board of Elections and Ethics, Halderman and several graduate students (who we are dubbing “Halderman’s Hackers”) had taken control of D.C.’s online voting system.

For years, WPFW 89.3 FM has been housed in the City Paper building in the multi-cultural Adams Morgan community in northwest D.C. The station, however, is not likely to be there much longer. The City Paper building is being leveled in order to make way for a $100 million, 150-room luxury boutique hotel to be run by Marriott.

“City Paper and WPFW and City Bikes are among the establishments that have given Adams Morgan its cache as a fascinating multicultural community. And to just see them lost… I’m astounded that there’s not been more community concern for that,” said Anthony Harvey, Associate Editor of TheInTowner newspaper.

Tony Norman

Tony Norman is a community activist and a member of the McMillan Park Committee. For years Norman has worked with the community to protect the historic 25-acre McMillan Park. “The residents simply don’t want a small city on this site,” said Norman. According to Norman, Ward 5 D.C. Councilmember Harry Thomas is ignoring the needs of his constituents and moving forward with a large scale development on McMillan Park. Norman questioned Thomas’ relationship with EYA, the developer of McMillan Park, which gave $55,000 to Thomas’ Ward 5 Business Council.

McMillan Park

In a May 2009 article entitled “Councilmember Thomas Gave Support to Controversial Development: Developer Promised $55,000 to Thomas’ Organization,” the Brookland Heartbeat carefully examined this issue:

In 2008, Ward 5 Councilmember Harry Thomas, Jr. threw his support behind a proposal from developer EYA to build 237 townhouses on the grounds of St. Paul’s College in Ward 5.

Monday, Tom Sherwood of NBC4 made a generous contribution to WPFW 89.3 FM’s  “Spectrum Today” and urged others to do likewise. Gloria Minott and I took the occassion to ask Sherwood about his early reporting for The Atlanta Constitution in the 1960s when he interviewed both civil rights workers as well as members of the Klan. Sherwood also discussed the state of the media today, as well “Dream City,” the classic book on D.C. politics which he co-wrote with Harry Jaffe.

To join Sherwood in supporting WPFW, please call 202 588 9739 during “Spectrum Today” which airs weeknights between 6-7:00 PM.

The run-down trailers at 1436 Girard St, NW, which make up the La Casa shelter, go unnoticed by most passersby. Located in Columbia Heights, a gentrifying – largely gentrified – neighborhood, the trailers seem out of place. Overshadowing them, literally, are luxury apartments owned by Donatelli and Klein, the new owners of the land upon which the La Casa shelter sits.

In order to clear the way for yet another high-end development, the men who stay at La Casa will be housed elsewhere by October 15th, according to District officials.

La Casa Homeless Shelter.

La Casa’s closure comes two years after the closure of Franklin Shelter, also located in northwest D.C. Very few shelters remain in or near the downtown area, where access to food, services and job opportunities are most readily available. Continue reading
